Kashmir Honeymoon Itinerary

Kashmir sits at the opposite end of India's climate from almost every other honeymoon destination we work with, and that's exactly the point for couples who want something genuinely different from lakes-and-palaces Rajasthan or tropical Kerala. The Mughal emperors who ruled India centuries ago came to Kashmir specifically to escape the summer heat elsewhere, and built entire terraced gardens here in its honour — the same gardens you'll walk through on this trip. The centrepiece is a stay aboard a traditional houseboat on Dal Lake, a genuinely unique way to sleep with the Himalayas visible from your own private deck, paired with a day trip up into Gulmarg's alpine meadows for a landscape that feels more like the Alps than anywhere else in India.

1

Day 1 — Arrive & Board Your Houseboat

Private transfer from Srinagar airport directly to Dal Lake, where a shikara — Kashmir's traditional slim wooden boat, often cushioned and canopied — carries you and your luggage out to your houseboat, since the boats themselves are moored on the water rather than reachable by road. Let us know it's a honeymoon when we arrange your stay, since several houseboats offer a genuinely ornately carved 'deluxe' or 'honeymoon' category room with walnut-wood interiors distinct from standard cabins, sometimes with a private sitting area opening directly onto the lake. The rest of the day is free to settle in and adjust, with an easy first-evening option of a sunset shikara ride across the lake, watching the snow-capped mountains turn pink as the light fades — a genuinely different first evening than almost anywhere else in India.

2

Day 2 — Mughal Gardens & the Old City

A day built around Srinagar's Mughal gardens, terraced formal gardens built in the 17th century specifically for imperial visits to escape the plains' summer heat. Visit Nishat Bagh, the 'Garden of Bliss', with its stepped terraces and fountains framed by the Zabarwan mountains, and Shalimar Bagh, built by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Empress Nur Jahan — a genuinely fitting stop on a honeymoon, given its own origin as a gesture of love centuries before the Taj Mahal was ever conceived. If tulip season aligns with your visit (typically late March to April), Asia's largest tulip garden is also nearby and worth the detour. In the afternoon, explore Srinagar's old city on foot, its wooden mosques and narrow lanes offering a very different character from the lake itself.

Day 3 — Day Trip to Gulmarg

A roughly 1.5 to 2 hour drive to Gulmarg, a hill station whose name literally translates to 'meadow of flowers', sitting at over 2,600 metres in the Pir Panjal range with a landscape that feels genuinely closer to the European Alps than anywhere else in India. Take the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, up toward Apharwat Peak for panoramic Himalayan views, snow-capped even in summer at the higher station, with the option of continuing to the second stage for views deep into the surrounding mountain ranges. The alpine meadows below are a popular spot for a picnic lunch together, and in winter (December to March) Gulmarg becomes a genuine skiing destination, an option worth considering if your travel dates align with the snow season specifically.

Day 4 — A Full Day on Dal Lake

A morning shikara ride to the floating vegetable market, active only in the very early hours, where farmers sell produce grown on Dal Lake's own floating gardens directly from boat to boat — a genuinely unusual sight most visitors never see given how early it starts, often before sunrise. Later, a private shikara excursion around the lake's quieter channels, including the floating post office and small lakeside shrines rarely visited by tourists staying only a night or two. The afternoon and evening are left free to enjoy your houseboat's private deck, order Kashmiri wazwan cuisine for dinner if your boat offers it — a traditional multi-course feast of meat dishes reserved for special occasions — and simply take in the mountains without a fixed schedule pressing on you.

Day 5 — Departure

A final unhurried morning on your houseboat, with time for one last shikara ride or breakfast on the private deck before a shikara transfer back to shore and a private car to Srinagar airport for departure. Five days in, most couples describe Kashmir as unlike anywhere else in their India trip — the mountains, the houseboat, and a noticeably different rhythm from the rest of the country's honeymoon circuits, one built around stillness and scenery rather than sightseeing between monuments. It's a genuinely strong pick for couples who've already done or aren't drawn to Rajasthan's forts and palaces, and want something visually and culturally distinct instead, closer in feeling to a mountain retreat than a traditional Indian sightseeing trip.

Why This Experience

Why Choose Kashmir Honeymoon With Us

Sleep With the Himalayas in View

A genuinely unique way to spend a honeymoon — your houseboat's private deck looks straight out at snow-capped peaks across the water.

A Landscape Unlike the Rest of India

Gulmarg's alpine meadows and Mughal gardens give Kashmir a character that feels closer to the Alps than anywhere else on the subcontinent.

Gardens Literally Built for Love

Shalimar Bagh was built by an emperor for his wife — a fitting stop on a honeymoon that most visitors don't realise has that history.

Best Time to Visit

April–October is Best

Spring (April–May) brings tulip season and blooming gardens; summer (June–August) offers the most comfortable houseboat and Gulmarg weather; autumn (September–October) brings golden chinar trees across Srinagar. December–March turns genuinely cold, though it's the season for skiing in Gulmarg specifically if that appeals.
