Kaziranga National Park, in the northeastern state of Assam, is genuinely unlike any other wildlife destination in India — a UNESCO World Heritage Site built around the Brahmaputra River's floodplain, and home to roughly two-thirds of the world's entire population of the great one-horned rhinoceros.
The park's safaris come in two distinct forms — jeep safaris covering more ground, and elephant-back safaris that move quietly enough through the tall grassland to get remarkably close to rhinos grazing in the open. Kaziranga is also a tiger reserve, though the rhino is unquestionably the park's signature sight.
Guided Rhino Safari in Kaziranga: How It Works
A guided rhino safari in Kaziranga is a jeep drive of about two hours through one of the park's four ranges, with a naturalist guide, in the morning or the afternoon. The best months are November to April, and every visitor needs a safari permit.
Each range feels different, so most visitors book more than one. Jeep safaris run in all four. Early-morning elephant-back rides, about an hour long, are offered only in the Central and Western ranges.

- Timings: morning and afternoon slots, set by the park and shifting with the season. Elephant rides go in the early morning. We confirm your exact slots when we book.
- Permits: required for every safari and tied to ID, so foreign visitors need their passport details at booking. Slots are limited and fill early in peak months.
- Season: the park is closed in the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods the reserve. Plan for November to April, with December to February the coolest.
