June is the month the south-west monsoon typically makes landfall in Kerala, usually in the first week, before spreading north and east over the following weeks. This makes June an awkward month for a classic South India coastal trip — the rain itself can be dramatic and even beautiful in short bursts, but it disrupts sightseeing and beach time. Rajasthan and Delhi remain hot and largely dry this early in the month, with the true monsoon not typically reaching the north-west until July.
The real story of June, though, is Ladakh. Sitting in the rain shadow of the Greater Himalayas, Ladakh receives only a fraction of the rainfall that soaks the rest of the country, and June sits right in the middle of its short, dry, high-altitude season — clear skies, accessible mountain passes, and some of the most dramatic landscapes in India, entirely unaffected by the monsoon unfolding hundreds of kilometres to the south.
