North India Tours Itinerary

This 9-day North India tour package extends the classic Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur) with Varanasi, India's most sacred city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It's the itinerary we recommend most often to international travellers who have more than a week and want the Mughal monuments and Rajasthan forts of the standard circuit plus the spiritual, unfiltered atmosphere of the Ganges ghats — a side of India the 6-day Golden Triangle route doesn't reach.

1

Day 1 — Arrive in Delhi

Private airport transfer to your Delhi hotel, with your guide and driver waiting at the terminal so there's no need to navigate taxi stands or currency exchange counters alone after a long international flight. Evening free to rest and adjust to the time difference — most travellers arriving from Europe, North America or Australia find the first evening is best spent simply settling in rather than rushing into sightseeing. Your guide will confirm the following morning's pickup time and answer any questions about the days ahead, including what to wear, what cash you'll need, and how the itinerary flexes around your preferences.

2

Day 2 — Delhi Sightseeing

Old and New Delhi in a single private day, covering the city's Mughal and colonial layers without the rush of a group tour schedule. Humayun's Tomb, the elegant red-sandstone precursor to the Taj Mahal, the Jama Masjid mosque, and a rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk's spice, textile and street-food lanes make up the morning in Old Delhi. In the afternoon, India Gate and the wide colonial-era avenues of the government quarter give a very different sense of the capital — planned, formal, and built by the British in the early 20th century. Your English-speaking guide narrates the history throughout, rather than leaving you to read plaques.

3

Day 3 — Delhi to Agra

A private, air-conditioned drive to Agra (around 3–4 hours), with a comfort stop along the expressway if needed. Visit the red sandstone Agra Fort, the Mughal seat of power before the capital later moved to Delhi, walking the same ramparts where Emperor Shah Jahan was reportedly held under house arrest with a view of the monument he built. Then see the Taj Mahal from across the Yamuna River at sunset — India's most iconic monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for most international travellers the single image that first drew them to visit India at all. Your guide will suggest the best vantage point for photographs at this hour, when the light is at its warmest.

4

Day 4 — Taj Mahal Sunrise, on to Jaipur

Sunrise entry to the Taj Mahal — the timing most seasoned India guides recommend, for softer light, cooler temperatures, and by far the smallest crowds of the day. Your guide points out the semi-precious stone inlay work and the deliberate architectural symmetry up close, details easy to miss without context. Afterwards, drive on to Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri, the remarkably intact abandoned Mughal capital built entirely from red sandstone by Emperor Akbar and deserted within a single generation due to water shortages — a genuinely fascinating stop that shorter, rushed itineraries often skip entirely. It's one of the quieter, more atmospheric sites on the whole route, and a favourite among returning guests.

5

Day 5 — Jaipur Sightseeing

Amber Fort, the City Palace complex, the Jantar Mantar astronomical observatory, and Hawa Mahal's honeycomb façade — the essential sights of Rajasthan's Pink City, so named for the terracotta wash applied to its old-city buildings in 1876. Amber Fort can be entered by jeep or, for those who'd like the classic experience, a short elephant ride up to the gates. Time is built in for Jaipur's celebrated bazaars — Johari Bazaar for gemstones and jewellery, Bapu Bazaar for hand block-printed textiles — both genuinely popular with international travellers looking for something authentically Rajasthani to bring home. This is your last full day in Rajasthan before the itinerary heads east toward Varanasi.

6

Day 6 — Jaipur to Varanasi

Fly from Jaipur (via Delhi) to Varanasi, the spiritual heart of Hinduism and among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, sitting on the banks of the sacred Ganges River. The flight keeps this leg of the journey short and comfortable rather than an overland haul of 12+ hours. In the evening, witness the Ganga Aarti — a nightly fire ceremony performed by priests on the riverside ghats, with rhythmic chanting, incense and oil lamps — an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on this itinerary, and often cited by past travellers as the emotional highlight of their entire India trip.

7

Day 7 — Varanasi Sunrise Boat Ride

A pre-dawn rowboat ride along the Ganges to watch the ghats wake up — bathers performing their morning rituals, priests chanting, and life along the riverbank unfolding much as it has for centuries. It's an early start, but consistently rated by past guests as worth every minute of lost sleep. Afterwards, visit Sarnath, the deer park on the outskirts of the city where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and now home to Ashokan pillars, a large stupa, and a quieter, more contemplative counterpoint to the intensity of the ghats. Many travellers find this pairing of sunrise ritual and Buddhist history the most reflective day of the entire trip.

8

Day 8 — Varanasi Free Day

A free day to wander the old city's narrow lanes and riverside temples at your own pace, with your guide available if you'd like company or simply want the day to yourself. Optional add-ons include a silk-weaving workshop visit — Varanasi is famous worldwide for its Banarasi silk sarees, hand-woven with real gold and silver thread — or a home-hosted North Indian cooking class, a favourite with travellers who want a hands-on cultural experience rather than another round of monument-viewing before their trip wraps up. It's also a good chance to return to the ghats at a quieter hour and simply sit with the atmosphere.

9

Day 9 — Departure

Fly back to Delhi to connect with your international departure flight, bringing this 9-day North India tour to a close. Your guide accompanies you to check-in on the domestic flight if timing allows, and can suggest a last stop near Delhi airport — a final meal, a quick market visit, or simply a calm transition back into travel mode — for those with a few spare hours before their long-haul flight home. Many guests tell us this longer route, ending in Varanasi rather than Jaipur, leaves the strongest overall impression of any itinerary we run, and it's the trip most first-time visitors to India say they'd recommend to a friend.

FAQ

Common Questions About the North India Tours

Can't find your answer? Our team responds within 2 hours on WhatsApp and within 12 hours by email.

Varanasi is roughly 12+ hours by road from Jaipur, so we fly that leg (via Delhi) to keep the trip comfortable and give you more time at each stop.

It's possible to compress it to 7–8 days, though Varanasi benefits from at least 2 full days. Tell us your available time and we'll advise honestly on what fits.

The figure shown is a starting estimate for twin-sharing, and doesn't include the domestic flight segment — we only book flights when a client requests it. The final quote depends on your travel dates, hotel category, and whether you'd like us to arrange those flights. We'll confirm exact pricing once we know your preferences.
