Mussoorie is a city and a municipal board, about 30 km from and in Dehradun district in the Indian state of Uttaranchal. This hill station, situated in the foothills of the Himalaya ranges, is also known as the Queen of the Hills. The adjoining town of Landour, which includes a military cantonment, is considered part of ‘greater Mussoorie’, as are the townships of Barlowganj and Jharipani.
Its history dates back to 1827 when Captain Young, an adventurous military officer, explored the present site and laid the foundation of this holiday resort which now has few rivals. Mussoorie is famous for its scenic beauty and hectic social life. It provides all kinds of amusement and every facility for domestic and foreign tourists.
Being at an average altitude of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft.), Mussoorie, with its green hills and varied flora and fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. Commanding snow ranges to the north-east, and glittering views of the Doon Valley and Shiwalik ranges in the south, the town was once said to present a ‘fairyland’ atmosphere to tourists.
Major Tourits Attractions:
About 7 km on the road to Dehradun, there is a nominal entry fee charged per person. One can enjoy boating.
The most popular getaway is on the new road to Yamunotri, about 15 km from Mussoorie. A bath in the Massorie Lake pool at the foot of the falls is a must-do for tourists thronging the spot. You can buy towels, bathing suits or warm up with a hot cuppa on the way to the falls.
Municipal Gardens or Company (Bagh) Gardens (as it was known prior to Independence) is a botanist’s dream. The famous geologist Dr. H. Fackner laid out these gardens.
We can go by Trauly (cable car) or walk up to Gun Hill, the second highest point in Mussoorie. In the days of the British, there was a gun mounted atop this hill, which was fired every noon, to enable people to set their watches. A horse ride on the steep incline is also an experience in itself.
Lace up those walking shoes. Mussoorie is best enjoyed in a leisurely stroll. You can start with The Mall. Dotted with a number of shops, this is the main artery of Mussoorie. Pick up a gift or two, take a rickshaw ride down the Mall, watch the sunset, or simply watch life pass by. The Mall is just the place to do all this and much more.
The Mall of late has become too crowded due to unchecked building activity. Yet if you want a place throbbing with life, going there is a must. But if you wish to move to more tranquil zones, shift to Sister’s Bazaar on the other side of the town, which is pristine and placid.
Van Chetna Kendra, 2 km from Mussoorie on the Tehri Bypass, is a spectacular picnic spot. The lovely park here surrounded by pine forests and flowering shrubs, is visually enchanting. The wildlife population of the park, which includes Ghurar, Kakar, Himalayan peacock, Monal etc is another major attraction.
Massoorie is also known for its academic institutions that include the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Indo-Tibetan Border Police Academy and the Defense Institute of Work Studies
